story about my country: Latvia is small Baltic country. The population is approx. 3 millions. There
are living mostly Latvians, Russians, Ukrainians and some other nationalities.
Riga is the capital city; I am living there. Riga is one of biggest European
cities - up to 800 000 population and very old also - since 1201. Last year Riga
celebrated 800th anniversary. In Latvia are traditionally not many breeds of horses: Latvian, Arden and
Latgales trotter. Latvian breed started in 1952. And the first it was a driving
horse. Later it was separated to driving type and riding type. Now is very hard
to find a good Latvian driving horse, because all breeding is targeted on riding
horse. At our stable we have 2 horses in old type. They looks very like old
Oldenburg carriage horses. But modern Latvian horses are very close to
Hannnoverans, Holstens and Trakens. Ardens are popular in countryside as working
horses. Latgales trotters originally very close to Russian trotters. Mostly they
are popular in Latgale - the East part of Latvia. In Latvia are many small private stables with several horses. Mostly they are
used for tourist hobby riding. About 10-20 years ago in Latvia were many big
stables, which bred horses for sport. Sidesaddle riding is not popular in Latvia. I could not find any sidesaddle
at all. I learn about sidesaddle riding from Internet approx. 1 year ago. At May
of 2002 I bought the sidesaddle and started to ride. It was very difficulty to
learn how to put on this saddle, because nobody could help us. This saddle was
made in Pakistan and very bad quality. But it was only one possibility to get
sidesaddle, so I took it. Our saddler repaired it, how he could. But it still is
not perfect, but nobody knows how to do it better. Last year I was thinking
about the trip to Austria to visit sidesaddle clinic, but it was not possible
for that moment. May be I will do it in future. Now I am riding my sidesaddle in

Schon als Schulmädchen träumte ich davon, einmal
im Damensattel reiten zu können wie die Kaiserin
Sisi.
Nach gute 30 Jahren hat sich diesen Traum erfüllt. Am 33.
Geburtstag habe ich angefangen Reiten zu lernen, ein Jahr
später konnte ich mir sogar ein eigenes Pferd leisten. Das es unbedingt ein
Haflinger sein mußte, hatte ich mir auch schon zur Jugendzeit in den Kopf
gesetzt.
Die Cora ist ein Goldstück: lieb, kuschelig, ruhig und cool. Sie zieht es selber
vor, mein Fahrpferd zu sein, aber seit wir uns auf's Westernreiten zugelegt
haben, macht ihr den Job als Reitpferd auch mehr Spaß.
Als wir Dezember 2002 von der
Stadt auf ein Industriegelände umgezogen sind, brauchte ich einen Kumpel für
mein 'Pferd hinterm Haus'. Das war die Remy, ein
Hafi-Isi-mix. Ein durchaus zuverlässiges Geländepferd mit super weichen Gängen.
(Leider haben Kuscheleinheiten bei ihr nichts verloren, obwohl sie im Winter
aussieht wie ein Teddy...)
Oh, wenn ich die doch mal unter Damensattel reiten könnte... .
Und tatsächlich fand ich im Internet DEN
Western-Damensattel schlechthin. Mein gutes Gefühl hat mich nicht getauscht.
Er paßt wie maßgeschneidert auf beiden Pferden!
Einmal habe ich den Sattel in der normalen
Trainungsstunde benutzt, damit ich unter Aufsicht checken
konnte, ob er auch im Galopp fest liegt. Das war der
Fall, es fühlte sich an wie schweben im Traum.
Am Wochenende sind wir - am Anfang ganz
vorsichtig, aber dann immer dreister - mit
"Kavaliere-Freundin" ins Gelände geritten. Das war es: ein unvergleichbares
Gefühl wie der Himmel-auf-Erden!!!
Es geht nicht von alleine, wir müssen noch viel und fleißig üben bis es locker
und elegant aussieht,
aber trotzdem haben wir uns getraut bei einer
Demo des www.dameszadel.nl mitzureiten.
Und am 19.September, wenn der 25. Jahrestag des Vereins
gefeiert wird ~ mit uA Dressur und freier Kur wie jedes Jahr, aber mehr Fete
drum herum ~ sind wir bestimmt dabei, denn reiten im Damensattel macht
unheimlich viel Spaß!!!

Here are some informations
from our Side-Saddle Show during Mayor's Cup (Moscow, Russia on September 6,
2003). There were two couples performing to a Strauss waltz.
Our side-saddle show lasted 7 minutes during the Mayor's Cup competition. The
Mayor's Cup is an international show-jumping comp, this year we had John and
Robert Witaker, Helena Weinberg (she was the first in the Mayor's Cup - one of
the 6 show-jumping competitions) and many other prominent riders as participants.
It is a World Cup-related event. Alongside with show-jumping during 4 days there
were dressage competitions, KUR (dressage to music), Pas-Deux-Deux and the
show-programme.
I also hunted side-saddle at the beginning of October and the picture shows the typical Russian huntsmen (the lady is in the historical riding costume of the 18-19th century when ladies could ride astride (like men) but should cover the legs (it is questionable - some say that they did not care since Elizabeth (Peter the Great's daughter) and Katherine the Great did not care and rode "like Tartars" themselves).
